"The Kreutzer Sonata" is the most famous Tolstoy's novella, that divulged the infamous mores of Russia's upper class. It was almost physically painful to read back in 1890. We believe its glorious time has arrived only now when the reality has finally caught up with Tolstoy's vision in the most evocative manner.
"It's not given to people to judge what's right or wrong. People have eternally been mistaken and will be mistaken, and in nothing more than in what they consider right and wrong," says Prince Andrei in "War and Peace". 30 years later, Tolstoy's Pozdnyshev will judge and most atrociously punish women for deceit and havoc the latter wreak on men's lives...
"The Kreutzer Sonata" is, probably, the most misinterpreted Tolstoy's work. The writer was accused of misogyny (even by his own wife), his work was banned from publishing in Russia initially. But did they read it right? And did they know for sure what was right?
